The AFC Scorer
Qatar hosted the AFC Asian Cup 2011 from January 7-29 in Doha. The tournament was held at five stadiums across the capital and saw 16 international football teams compete to be crowned as the champions of Asia.
With such a major event being held on our doorstep Byrne were very keen to play as big a role as possible. From the very outset, in August 2010, we were involved in discussions with the Local Organising Committee regarding venue overlay, the AFC Fan Zone and other side projects, including the civil defence sites and local Special Forces bases around Doha.
Roll out was spread over a period of approximately three-and-a-half months, beginning with our custom built ticket booths at Qatar’s national football and athletics venue, Khalifa Stadium, which played host to Brazil versus Argentina as a warm-up event.
Byrne teamed up with the overlay contractor to provide a variety of services including the building of temporary infrastructure at all venues which included the supply of ticket booths, ablution units, tower lights, site compounds, generators, reefers and storage containers. The supply of equipment was backed up with our teams providing the support services and equipment including plumbing, power distribution, fencing, air conditioning, telehandlers and forklifts.
